Frasier Island My 4x4 Adventure
Frasier Island here we come. Jamie (The Crazy Scot's man) And I, left this morning for Rainbow Beach.
The "Beast" did very well for her first road trip. No problems. We arrived and went straight for the Pub to get a beer and a Bite to eat. We camped in the Van that night. It was good. It was HOT at about 5am so it was pretty uncomfortable sleeping in. We checked in at the hostel awaiting information on our Trip to Fraiser. We Were placed in a group with 7 others. We sat down introduced ourselves, and made a grocery list for the next few days. All in all everyone came to an agreement on what we should bring and what we could live without for a few days. Well there's always one, And No it wasn't me this time ;) It was a 4 foot 10 inch tall, 33 year old German lady. Little did I know then, that this lady was going to be such a handful and pain in everyone's rear. She had do Disagree with everything. The Food, The Places we went, How long we stayed, The weather... Everything. It drove everyone mad. But You would be proud, I just smiled and bit my lip. It was after all a beautiful place and I couldn't spend it listening to her. I had a Wonderful Time.
Now Fraser Island is the Worlds largest sand island stretching around 120km from north to south and 15km from east to west, covering a total of 160,000 hectares. It was formed during the ice age by strong winds which blew sand from New South Wales to where Fraser Island now stands off of the coast of Queensland.
The name Fraser Island cane from Eliza Fraser, who was shipwrecked on the island along with her husband. By the Aborigines the island is known as K'gari meaning 'Paradise', which suitably matches the islands beauty. The Aborigines were forced off of the island. Fraser Is full of beautiful Rain forested areas and Dunes. Fraser Island, it is now listed as a World Heritage area.
After a few hours on Fraser Island we knew why everyone was talking about their trip to this island. It's just awesome. The stuff you see and do is amazing. First of all. Surprisingly enough it was a lot fun being nine of us backpackers in one overcrowded Toyota Land Cruiser. Second you get to see some really Wonderful places. On the island there are a lot of small fresh water lakes. Take for an example Lake McKenzie, The Most Beautiful Lake I have ever seen!!! You are greeted with pure white sand and the prettiest Blue and green waters. The water is so clean and Clear you can drink it & swim with your eyes open! And The Girls... Wow! That's all I need to say. I'll say it again WOW!!!
All the lakes are on the southern part of the island and to go from the southern part to the northern tip, one has to drive on the islands only highway to get to the north. Which is also the islands only airstrip! This combined highway/airstrip is the islands east beach, so you drive on the beach for Miles... This makes for some interesting 4 WD driving when crossing the Washouts. The Little German was the scariest driver I have ever seen. I had to tell her she had to let someone else drive. We all took turns driving. I had a blast. I Drove for hours through the rainforest and on the beach. It seemed no one really knew how to drive over the terrain. Apart from Jamie, one Irish guy and Myself. The holes and washout made for a bumpy ride. Well when I wasn't driving that is. Smile. But really growing up in Idaho and driving our mountain roads really came in handy.
On the way up, on beach you pass the Maheno wreck, one of many ship wrecks on and around the island. This was really neat. I had a great time relaxing by the wreck. Just thinking about what amazing history this ship must have. What a great Adventure and then to end up here on this Breach.
Still traveling north along the beach we came to a dead end. The Look out point to all of Frasier. This is where Millions of people come to Whale watch. I didn't see a Whale but I saw a few Sea Turtles. This made me smile.
Well at the end of the day we set out to find a place to camp. We camped on the Beach. We set up the tents and Made dinner. The Girls made Dinner one night and I the other. Only hambugers and sausages. but still good I must say.
Well The Trip is coming to an end only a few Hours left.... When BAM! We got into Car Crash. Everyone was ok. Jamie was driving, We were going West to Lake Mckenzie for one last dip. It's such a beautiful lake we just had too, one last time. Well this French man driving a 4x4 going South east at about 30k's to fast. Hit us, head on. Luckily Jamie was a good driver. He hit the breaks and managed to almost stop our car before the other Car could hit. I was in one of the back seats . We were on a straight away approaching a blind corner when Bam.
The other car obtained most of the damage. Ours was fine. We stopped for a while got the drivers details and made sure everything was ok. We finished out the day. It was great. We drove the truck back to the ferry and then to the Car Rental shop. We told them what had happened. But they already knew. The French man had called hours before telling them the story... And that's what they got, a big fat story. The French man said it was our fault and that he had pulled over on the side of the road when Jamie hit him. We were shocked by this. Not only did the Guy admit it was his fault we have 9 witnesses to prove it. Not only that I took a few pics of the seen of the crash. Man I just must have known that this guy was going to pull something. Its to bad you cant seem to trust anyone these days.
Well I'm safe & sound. Jamie took off this morning for Sydney to spend Christmas with some friends and family of his. I will leave in a few hours traveling north to go sailing through the Great Barrier reef and the Whitsundays. I'm so excited.
Check back soon for more Adventures of me.
